Treating the WHOLE body.
In some situations myofunctional therapy alone isn’t enough to treat the problem at hand and is used in conjuction with other treatments. This is often the case when there is a structural disorder, rather than a funtional one.
Myofunctional dysfunctions are broken into 2 categories- Structural and Functional.
A functional dysfunction means that you’re just not using your body correctly. A structural dysfunction means that your body has a structural issue blocking you from using your body correctly.
Orofacial structural dysfunctions include; tongue-ties, enlarged tonsils or nasal blockages. In order to get the full benefits of myofunctional therapy these structural issues need to be treated as well.
Myofunctional therapy often uses an interdisciplinary approach to treat the whole patient. Often we work with many other specialists such as; ear nose and throat physicians, oral maxillofacial surgeons, speech and language pathologists, pediatricians and others.
